EU ambassador says he expects release of Swedish citizen detained by China

BEIJING: The European Union?s Ambassador to China said on Wednesday he expects Chinese authorities to immediately release Swedish citizen and Hong Kong-based bookseller Gui Minhai, echoing demands from Stockholm. Sweden confirmed on Tuesday that Gui, who has published books on the personal lives of Chinese Communist Party leaders, was taken into custody at the weekend while traveling with Swedish diplomats to seek medical treatment in Beijing. EU Ambassador to China Hans Dietmar Schweisgut told reporters at a briefing that the EU ?fully supports? Sweden?s efforts to resolve the issue with China. ?We expect the Chinese authorities to immediately release Gui Minhai from detention and to allow him to reunite with his family, to get consulate support and medical support in line with his rights, because he is a Swedish citizen and also a citizen of the European Union,? IHC declares mobile phone service suspension illegal

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday delivered its verdict against the suspension of mobile phone services across the country under the pretext of security.  Multiple petitions had been submitted against the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)  and the case was decided last year in September by Justice Ather Minallah, but the judgement was reserved to be delivered at a later date.  The verdict which was read out in open court declared that, "the actions, orders and directives issued by the Federal Government or the Authority, as the case may be, which are inconsistent with the provisions of section 54(3) are declared as illegal, ultra vires and without lawful authority and jurisdiction."  Petitioners had moved the court terming the suspension of mobile phone and internet services as a violation of their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan.
