IHC declares mobile phone service suspension illegal

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday delivered its verdict against the suspension of mobile phone services across the country under the pretext of security.  Multiple petitions had been submitted against the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)  and the case was decided last year in September by Justice Ather Minallah, but the judgement was reserved to be delivered at a later date.  The verdict which was read out in open court declared that, "the actions, orders and directives issued by the Federal Government or the Authority, as the case may be, which are inconsistent with the provisions of section 54(3) are declared as illegal, ultra vires and without lawful authority and jurisdiction."  Petitioners had moved the court terming the suspension of mobile phone and internet services as a violation of their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan. Twitter sets crackdown on automated ?bot? accounts

SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter announced Wednesday a crackdown on accounts powered by software ?bots? which can artificially amplify a person or cause and which have been accused of manipulating the social network during the 2016 US election. The San Francisco messaging platform said the move was intended to rid the service of spam-spewing automated accounts, and not aimed at people using the service according to the rules. ?These changes are an important step in ensuring we stay ahead of malicious activity targetting the crucial conversations taking place on Twitter ? including elections in the United States and around the world,? Twitter developer policy lead Yoel Roth said in a blog post. The move was the latest by Twitter to enforce rules aimed at curbing disinformation, propaganda and provocation.
